“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.” — Galatians 2:20
Sundar Singh was born into a Sikh family in Punjab in 1889. As a young person he wrestled deeply with spiritual questions and strongly opposed Christianity. His later testimony described a crisis in which he cried out for God to reveal the truth and became convinced that Jesus Christ had met him. The change brought conflict and rejection, but he remained committed to Christ.
After baptism, Sundar did not adopt the appearance of a European clergyman. He wore the saffron robe of an Indian sadhu and traveled as an itinerant preacher. This was not an attempt to mix religions. It expressed his conviction that following Jesus did not require becoming culturally Western.
He walked through North India and the Himalayan region, repeatedly attempting to carry the Gospel toward Tibet. He preached, prayed, served, and wrote books of spiritual reflection. Accounts of his life contain extraordinary stories, some of which are difficult to verify; responsible readers should distinguish documented history from later devotional legend. What is clear is that his prayerful life and Indian expression of Christian discipleship influenced believers in India and abroad.
Christ is not owned by one culture
Sundar Singh challenged both colonial attitudes and the idea that Christianity was merely a Western religion. He showed that an Indian believer could follow Jesus wholeheartedly while speaking, dressing, teaching, and illustrating truth in ways rooted in Indian life.
His simplicity also confronts modern ministry built around comfort and recognition. He belonged to the road, accepted hospitality, and depended on God. Few Christians are called to copy his exact lifestyle, but every Christian is called to ask whether possessions, reputation, or cultural pride have become more important than obedience.
A prayer for authentic witness
Lord Jesus, live Your life through us. Deliver us from confusing the Gospel with cultural pride. Help Indian Christians express faith with biblical truth, spiritual depth, humility, and courage. Strengthen those who carry Your Word to difficult places, and make our lives point clearly to You. Amen.
