Gladys Aylward grew up in an ordinary working-class home in London and worked as a housemaid. When she became convinced that God was calling her to China, she applied for missionary training. She was not accepted as suitable for the program. The rejection could have ended the dream, but she continued praying, working, saving, and searching for a way to obey.
In 1932 she began a long overland journey toward China with limited resources. She eventually joined an older missionary, Jeannie Lawson, in Yangcheng. Their inn served travelers and created opportunities to tell Bible stories. Gladys learned the language and became increasingly integrated into local life.
Her service expanded in unexpected ways. She assisted local authorities in ending foot-binding practices, cared for children, and acted courageously during conflict. Her best-known journey involved guiding a large group of children through dangerous wartime conditions toward safety. Popular retellings have sometimes dramatized details, but the core testimony remains: an apparently ordinary woman accepted extraordinary responsibility.
Rejection is not always God’s refusal
Sometimes a closed door protects us from a wrong path. At other times, it forces us to prepare differently. Gladys did not treat rejection as permission to become bitter. She kept working, saving, and taking practical steps. Her persistence was not self-promotion; it was directed toward service.
Her story should not make us despise training or wise evaluation. The church needs accountable and well-prepared workers. But it warns us not to confuse academic ease, social background, or outward impressiveness with God’s calling. God often forms servants through ordinary work long before anyone recognizes them.
A prayer for willing hearts
Lord, encourage those who feel overlooked or inadequate. Show them where growth is needed and where perseverance is required. Protect us from pride, recklessness, and bitterness. Take our ordinary skills, surrendered plans, and willing hearts, and use them to protect and bless others. Amen.
