“Love never faileth.” — 1 Corinthians 13:8
Amy Carmichael came to South India in 1895 after earlier missionary service in Japan. She loved evangelistic work, but the cries of vulnerable children forced her to face a need she could not ignore. Instead of protecting her original plans, she allowed God to redirect her calling.
In 1901 she founded the Dohnavur Fellowship in Tamil Nadu. It began as a safe home for children and grew into a community with Indian women and men serving as caregivers, teachers, nurses, farmers, builders, and spiritual mentors. Amy was affectionately known as “Amma,” but the strength of Dohnavur was not one personality. It became a family in which many people offered their gifts to create safety, education, worship, healthcare, and belonging.
Amy remained in India for fifty-six years and did not return to Ireland. Her perseverance included opposition, misunderstanding, illness, and the sorrow of children who could not be saved. After a serious accident limited her mobility, she continued serving through prayer and writing. Physical limitation did not end her ministry; it changed its form.
Love that listens
This testimony challenges a common temptation: serving the need we prefer instead of the need placed before us. Christlike love listens carefully. It does not use vulnerable people to build a reputation. It protects their dignity, accepts long responsibility, and works with trustworthy local coworkers.
Dohnavur’s continuing ministries in child care, education, healthcare, women’s empowerment, elderly care, and community development show how one act of obedient compassion can become a legacy. The most powerful part of the story is not adventure. It is staying love—the love that does not abandon people when care becomes difficult.
A prayer for compassionate courage
Lord Jesus, open our eyes to people whose suffering is easy to overlook. Free us from protecting our plans when You are calling us to love. Give us wisdom, courage, purity of motive, and the grace to serve in partnership with others. Let our love be patient, truthful, and enduring. Amen.
